Reshaping Perspectives and Catalyzing Diplomatic Evolution

The Central Bank has warned Russians about the new system of scammers with QR codes

A new type of fraud has appeared in Russia: attackers have started using QR codes to withdraw money. This was declared to the Central Bank of the Russian Federation.

“In order to steal money, scammers are using the QR code cash withdrawal service, which has become available in some banks,” read a post on the regulator’s Telegram channel.

It should be noted that scammers call a bank customer and report an alleged attempt to withdraw funds, after which they ask to send him a QR code to cancel the operation. Having received such a code, fake bank employees simply withdraw money from ATMs from the deceived person’s account.

The Central Bank of the Russian Federation advised users not to store the QR code image on their mobile device or in printed form and not to share it with anyone, stressing that real bank employees never ask customers a QR code.

Earlier, security service VTB recorded an increase in the activity of fraudsters using a new scheme to trick customers into accessing an online bank’s personal account. According to the press service of the bank, the scammers call the customer by phone, pose as employees of the contact center, inform about the blocking of the online bank account and ask to dictate the password of the SMS message in order to restore the access to the personal account. As a result of fraud, criminals can access all customer accounts.
