The head of the Kurchatov Institute: the United States did not guess the recipe for the alloy of Russian RD-180 engines

The Americans were never able to establish what the alloy of the Russian RD-180 rocket engines was made of. Mikhail Kovalchuk, president of the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute”, shared this opinion on Saturday during a lecture at Peter the Great Polytechnic University of St. Petersburg.

“So far the Americans have been buying our RD-180 rocket motors, … we have been selling them for many years. They take it apart, assemble it, take it apart, assemble it, but they can’t make any metal,” he said.

Kovalchuk also noted at a conference on nature-like technologies that the very process of creating alloys involves a number of difficulties. They are typical of the space and aeronautical industries. In this regard, not all countries have sufficient capacity to produce spare parts for fighter jets, he said.

Earlier, the head of the Ministry of Defense of Slovakia, Yaroslav Nagy, said that Russian technical specialists allegedly caused malfunctions in the operation of MiG-29 fighters in service with the Slovak armed forces. The Russians served the mentioned aircraft in Slovakia until last year.
