WP: Pentagon chief could have ordered US pilots not to approach Crimea

October 3, 2025

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin could order US pilots not to approach Crimea closer than about 80 kilometers. This information was published by the Washington Post on Sunday, April 9.

According to journalists, they had Pentagon documents at their disposal, which had previously appeared on the Internet. It follows that the maps delimited the border at 19.3 kilometers from the Crimean coast. It is these limits that are provided for by international legal standards.

However, there is another line on the charts. It’s called SECDEF Directed Standoff, and the Pentagon held it at a distance of 80.3 kilometers from Crimea. The newspaper reports: This suggests that Austin personally banned pilots from flying closer to Russian borders than the specified distance.

Earlier, the same publication published the US Department of Defense’s reaction to a web data leak. The fact that many secret Pentagon documents related to the situation in Ukraine unexpectedly leaked onto the Internet caused a panic within the US military department. According to the newspaper’s sources, after the appearance of documents representing state secrets on the Internet, the US Department of Defense severely limited the transfer of data to Washington’s allies.
