Dr.. Nabil Al-Audaini to Qatari media: The fasting of a kidney patient needs to consult a doctor

Patients who have undergone kidney transplants may not be able to fast because they need to drink plenty of water

Dr. Nabil Al-Adaini, consultant of urology and kidney surgery at Al-Emadi Hospital, advised kidney patients to consult a doctor before fasting to assess the health status of the kidneys and their ability to tolerate fasting or not, in order to avoid any health complications for those with such chronic diseases.

He added, in statements to Qatari media, that kidney problems are multiple, and patients’ cases differ from each other, and there are some groups who must refrain from fasting to avoid endangering their lives, and others must ask a specialist doctor, and in the event that fasting is permitted, they must follow many necessary advice, and refer to him in the event. the occurrence of any complications.

And he added that in general, care must be taken to drink a large amount of fluids during the evening period to compensate for the fluids lost by the body, explaining that this advice applies to those who have healthy and undisturbed kidneys, while those with various kidney disorders are not advised to drink more water, but they have to. Follow the instructions of the attending physician about the amount of fluids that are appropriate for them and that do not cause stress for their diseased kidneys.

He pointed out that there are cases for which fasting is not preferred, and they are those with kidney stones who did not go beyond the acute or dangerous stage, as well as those with conditions that cause dehydration such as diarrhea, vomiting and fever, and patients who take some diuretics or drugs treating high blood pressure that raise the risk of dehydration and are accompanied by the problem of infection. Kidney stones and infections.

He added that the cases also include patients with kidney stones and infections together, because they have to keep drinking water every two hours, at most, to wash the urinary tract and remove sediment, stones and germs, as well as those who are repeatedly infected with stones, they must constantly drink doses of water continuously to maintain hydration and washing of the kidneys and not salt deposits in it.

He added that in some cases, fasting may increase the chance of stones forming, if accompanied by the body suffering from dehydration while eating foods rich in salts and amino acids, especially animal proteins, and excessive consumption of chocolate and coffee that contain oxalate compounds, but on the other hand, it may be beneficial and reduce the chance of stones forming. It is accompanied by plenty of drinking water and moderation in eating food, especially foods that contain calcium and vitamin C, because they may protect against the formation of stones.

He also indicated that he advises those who suffer from kidney problems, which are accompanied by chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes or nephritis, not to fast, for fear of deterioration in their condition. They are also advised to adhere to taking their medication doses on time, which may conflict with fasting times.

He pointed out that there are groups of kidney patients who are allowed to fast under conditions, and they are patients with renal insufficiency, that is, those who suffer from the inability of the kidneys to carry out their vital functions, perhaps the most prominent of which is preserving the fluids that the body needs, which may cause them to suffer complications that reach dehydration, and that group can Fasting, but it depends on the degree of insufficiency, and the approval of the doctor, provided that specific conditions are adhered to, the most prominent of which are regular medication doses and a healthy diet.

And he added that for chronic kidney failure patients who are undergoing dialysis, it is impossible for them to fast on the day of the dialysis operation because they receive fluids intravenously, and this in itself invalidates the fast, but on days when this operation does not take place, they can fast if the attending physician approves and evaluates him for the condition of the kidneys themselves. and health status of the patient.

He explained that patients who underwent kidney transplants may not be able to fast because they need to drink plenty of water and receive specific treatment doses, to avoid any serious complications, especially if the operation was recent and the patient is subject to follow-up to ensure the harmony of the new organ in the body and its proper functioning. Patients who have undergone recent surgeries are prevented from fasting because they are in a period that requires intravenous medication or fluid intake in a certain way. He explained that some kidney patients may have diabetes, and in that case fasting may be undesirable because they are exposed to blood glucose disorder, which puts their lives at risk.
