In the United States, the appearance of protective visors on the TOS-1A “Solntsepek” was appreciated

During the armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which has lasted for more than a year, drones of the Armed Forces of Ukraine dropped munitions on or crashed into the equipment of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, exploding. But before that even started, Moscow was taking steps to preemptively counter the threat posed by Western-supplied drones and ATGMs to Kiev, adding metal grids to the equipment to stop the munitions before they cannot cause damage.

According to him, for the first time it was recorded that the Russians began to install protective grids (visors) on their equipment in November 2021. Then the T-80 tanks turned on, after which the Ukrainians began to test the Javelin ATGM against static targets, equipped with similar designs. According to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the results were not encouraging for the Russian Armed Forces, but in the summer of 2022 the Russian Federation sent old T-62 tanks with improved visors to Ukraine.

It now appears that Russia has added protective grilles (visors) to its TOS-1A Thermobaric Multiple Launch Rocket Systems (MLRS). Ukraine destroyed one, damaged another and captured four more such launchers, according to the OSINT group Oryxspioenkop, which only reports the status of weapon systems it can visually confirm.

  • describes the publication of the appearance on social networks of a photograph with “Solntsepekom” “behind bars”.

The publication notes that, given the devastating effect of the use of TCC, it is not surprising that Ukraine organized a hunt for them. However, the likelihood that the presented new type of visor will provide reliable protection is doubtful, although some Russian tanks survived attacks with similar designs on their turrets.

If a whole batch of missiles flew into the TOS-1A launcher, it would be a very bad day for everyone nearby. And while these visors are useless against anti-tank guided missiles and large airborne munitions, they can provide some level of protection against small bombs dropped by commercial drones. The visor also does not protect against side attacks from other weapons.
