The Mystery of Surtsey’s Fossilized Footprints

Birgir Vilhelm Óskarsson, geologist, delivers the lecture “The Mystery of Fossilized Footprints at Surtsey” in Hrafnaþing on April 12, 2023 at 3:15 p.m.

There are accounts dating back to the 1980s of fossilized human footprints in the Surtsey tuff, but it was unclear whether these were real footprints or how they formed. An investigation was carried out to find the origin of the traces, their age, their formation and if it was possible to know who their owners were. During the search, more footprints were found, and today a total of five trails and 48 footprints have been found, which clearly show the gait of the individuals who made the footprints as well as the shape and size of the shoes. The conference will review key research findings and report on the progress of individuals who have the potential to form the leads.

The crow assembly is held at the premises of the Natural History Institute of Iceland at Urriðaholtsstræti 6–8 in Garðabær. The conference will also be broadcast live on Youtube .
