Moscow: Russia’s entire Pacific Fleet has been put on high alert on Friday for contingency drills that will include large-scale drill missile launches amid tensions with the West over fighting in Ukraine. Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said the exercise was aimed at testing Russia’s armed forces’ ability to respond to aggression. Shoigu said that along with the missile launch, the exercise would also involve nuclear-capable strategic bombers and other warplanes, in addition to the Pacific Fleet’s air arm.
The Russian military has deployed the bulk of its forces to the front lines in Ukraine, but has also continued to hold regular exercises across the country to train its forces and demonstrate their readiness. Shoigu said the scenario for Friday’s maneuvers envisages a response to an enemy landing attempt on Sakhalin Island and the southern Kuril Islands.
