Due to the eruption of the Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka, most of its dome was destroyed, a large crater formed at the site of the explosion. On this subject informed “Interfax” in reference to the staff of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Far Eastern branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Thanks to improved weather conditions, scientists were able to see the volcano for the first time after Shiveluch erupted. According to Yury Demyanchuk, an employee of the volcanic station in the village of Klyuchi, apparently an explosion was directed towards the southeast and most of the active dome building was destroyed.

“A huge crater with a diameter of more than a kilometer has formed. The most powerful fumarolic activity associated with degassing is observed in the crater, ”explained the scientist.

He also said that pyroclastic flows passed from the volcano over a distance of more than 20 km.

Alexei Ozerov, director of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, clarified that the main phase of the Shiveluch eruption is over, but it will continue to erupt ” for quite a long time”. The ash from the volcano will also be in the atmosphere for a long time.

Shiveluch is one of the largest volcanoes in the Kamchast region. It includes structures such as the Old Shiveluch Volcano, the Old Caldera, and the active Young Shiveluch Volcano. The height of the lava dome of the latter was 2500 m above sea level. The age of the volcano is estimated at about 60-70 thousand years.

The strong phase of the Shiveluch eruption occurred on the night of April 11. The black ash cloud rose up to 20 km in height and extended 500 km to the northwest. Following the liberation in the village of Klyuchi, located 50 km from Shiveluch, it became as dark in the morning as at night. The fallout of such a volume of ash (8.5 cm) in the village is a record since 1964.

On the morning of April 12, the thickness of the ash layer in Klyuchi reached 20 cm. Employees of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the regional rescue service of the data center, the regional department of Rospotrebnadzor and the Ministry of Health worked at the site. urgency.
