Armed clashes broke out in the center and south of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, between the army and the Rapid Support Forces, and similar clashes broke out in the city of Meroe, in northern Sudan.
Eyewitnesses told Al-Jazeera that the clashes began south of Khartoum with the deployment of the Rapid Support Forces and the army around the sports city.

Witnesses told Reuters that heavy gunfire was heard in the vicinity of the Sudanese Army General Command and the Ministry of Defense headquarters in central Khartoum.
Gunfire was also heard in the Sudanese city of Bahri, in the vicinity of facilities of the Rapid Support Forces.

Reuters said that artillery and armored vehicles were deployed in the Sudanese city of Omdurman.
Activists broadcast a live video clip on Facebook documenting the clashes erupting in Khartoum and the rising plumes of smoke as a result of the clashes.
