There are fewer and fewer hospital beds in Germany. Over the past 30 years, their number has fallen by around a third, to 581 per 100,000 inhabitants, according to RedaktionsNetzwerk Deutschland (RND), citing an assessment by the Federal Statistical Office for the Left Party parliamentary group in the Bundestag, which calls for a moratorium on hospital closures.
In 1991, there were about 665,500 beds in Germany, and in 2021 there were about 483,600. In terms of the population over 30, this ratio increased from 832 to 581 beds per 100,000 inhabitants.
Dietmar Bartsch, leader of the Left Party, has criticized what he sees as flawed healthcare policy based on market logic and privatization. “We need – based on the lessons of Corona – a moratorium on hospital closures.” These medical institutions should be entirely in the hands of the state. Each hospital is important, especially considering the rural areas.
Lauterbach considers hospital reform
Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) is planning a reorganization and wants to radically restructure the 1,800 hospitals that are currently still operating nationwide. More outpatient care, less hospitalization, that’s his plan. Many federal states fear they will be closed as a result, including small hospitals. According to RedaktionsNetzwerk, despite the budget cuts of the past decades, Germany still has a relatively high hospital bed density in international comparison.
Many experts agree that hospitals need to be reformed. The last reorganization took place 20 years ago, and the latest hospital ranking report from the RWI Economic Research Institute – Leibniz-Institut showed that one in ten establishments are experiencing significant losses.
