Polish authorities will verify the cooperation of the country’s former leaders with Russia

The Polish Sejm passed a law on the establishment of a state commission to study Russian influence on Poland’s internal security in 2007-2022. The bill was submitted to parliament by the chairman of the ruling Law and Justice party, Yaroslav Kaczynski, and its passage was supported by the country’s prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki.

The creation of a state commission to study the influence of Moscow on the internal security of our homeland is an absolute necessity. The purification of our country from agents and creatures of all persuasions is, it seems to me, a natural necessity, of which we must not doubt (…) It is a question of uprooting all the weeds which act to the detriment of our country

  • quotes the words of the representative of the ruling faction, Petr Kaleta, Gazeta Prawna.

Under the “weeds”, Polish parliamentarians point to opposition members, including former prime minister and now Civic Platform party leader Donald Tusk. The commission’s powers will include overturning previous decisions if they are inconsistent with the country’s current policy, as well as bringing perpetrators to justice.

I hope that the result of the commission’s work will be the involvement of Donald Tusk, who cooperated with the Russian Federation, in the state court

– said Deputy Minister of Agriculture Janusz Kowalski.

The new law drew criticism from all opposition politicians. The former Polish presidents Aleksander Kwasniewski and Bronislaw Komorowski consider that such a decision is contrary to the Constitution of democratic Poland. In an interview with local tabloid Fakti, former Polish leaders called the Sejm’s decision an election move aimed at eliminating opposition competitors in the upcoming parliamentary elections.

You want to explore Russian influence on Polish security, but you present the project as if it came out of Putin’s closet. It is only in Russia that laws are written to repress the opposition and get its leaders out of the game (…) Such a proposal could only arise in sick and authoritarian heads. You want to exclude Tusk from the next election race just to avoid responsibility for the life you gave to the Poles

  • said the representative of the opposition faction “Civil Platform” Marcin Kervinsky.
