The former remand center “Crosses” in St. Petersburg is about to be auctioned, which will be managed by the state corporation “Dom.RF”. It is assumed that “Detention Center No. 1” will be repaired for at least five years, and the future fate of the historic building is not known. “The Eastern Herald in St. Petersburg asked the townspeople how they would like to see Kresty in the future.
It turned out that almost half of St. Petersburg residents (47%) would like the building on the Arsenalnaya embankment to be used for its intended purpose, but officials who were mostly guilty of law there been placed.
Around a quarter of respondents would like to see a new, modern museum, and around 10% suggest setting up an art space in a historic building. Interestingly, just over 6% decided it was a good idea to equip a hotel with an isolation ward, and 12.5% would like to convert a prison into a monastery.
Recall that “Crosses” is a prison built in 1893. It consists of two cruciform buildings, for which it takes its name. The prison provided for 960 solitary confinement cells, a smithy, public baths, a boiler room and the Church of St. Alexander Nevsky.
