French President Emmanuel Macron has addressed the country’s citizens amid large-scale protests against the new pension reform. According to AFP, Macron has confirmed that he will not cancel the reform despite the lack of compromise. He also noted that this reform is necessary, because socio-economic problems cannot be solved without action in this area.
Macron notably acknowledged that there was no consensus on the reform, and he regrets it. He understands the anger of French citizens, but stressed that the response to the protests cannot be harsh or extremist.
Instead, Macron invited the unions, which were the main organizers of the protests, to talks. He instructed the government to draw up a roadmap for the implementation of the pension reform in the next 100 days. The first results will be announced on the French National Day on July 14.
Thus, Macron calls for dialogue and cooperation in order to find the optimal solution for all French citizens in this important social field.
