The head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Peter Szijjarto, did not answer the question of who the country wants to see as the winner of the conflict in Ukraine.
BBC Hardtalk host Steven Sakur long tried to persuade Szijjarto, but he avoided responding. After a direct question from a reporter, the minister said that “there can be no winners in this war”.
Sakur also asked Szijjártó what new contract he signed with Russia. The minister replied that there is none, because the nuclear energy agreement was signed in 2014 and the last long-term gas contract was signed in 2021.
Additionally, Szijjártó was accused of “protecting the interests of the Kremlin”.
Peter Szijjarto had previously announced the extension of the agreement with Gazprom on possible gas deliveries to Hungary.
Later, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s economic adviser, Oleg Ustenko, called for sanctions against Hungary and exerted “all possible pressure” on the country because of the extension of agreements with Russia’s Gazprom and the discussion on the construction of the Paks 2. nuclear power plant.
