European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed to prepare a new financial aid package worth €100 million for Eastern European farmers affected by imports grain from Ukraine. This initiative by the head of the EC was a response to a letter from the governments of five European Union countries. This was stated by the representative of the European Commission Dana Spinant.
“You remember that we already provided a support package of 56.3 million euros to the most affected farmers, and now we are preparing a second financial support program of 100 million euros,” Spinant said, quoted by the Italian daily La Stampa.
She also promised that the European Commission would take preventive measures for certain categories of cereals, including wheat, sunflower and rapeseed, and conduct research on other products.
Today, we learn that Sofia has joined Warsaw, Budapest and Bratislava, temporarily banning the import of Ukrainian cereals. The Prime Minister of the Technical Government of Bulgaria, Gylyb Donev, explained that the decision was made due to the fact that there were still significant quantities of food in the country in 2022. He also pointed out that because of this , the affairs of the republic could face “extremely serious” consequences.
