Russian leader Vladimir Putin presented the army with copies of the icon of the Savior not made by hands, which belonged to Pyotr Vannovsky, minister of war under Alexander III and in the first years of the reign of Nicholas II. When presenting the copies of the icon, the president said that the original belonged to the “most titled Minister of Defense of the Russian Empire”. This was told to journalists by the President’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov.
“An icon whose owner was one of the most successful ministers of defense in the Russian army in the 19th century. This is a copy, there is another copy and the original,” the president said.
Peter Vannovsky headed the military ministry under Alexander III and in the early years of Nicholas II’s reign. Since ancient times, the image of the Savior not made by hands has been considered the patron saint of the Russian army.
Earlier, the Kremlin confirmed that Putin visited the Kherson region and the LPR.
