Around 80 people were killed and 120 injured in the Yemeni capital Sanaa during the distribution of humanitarian aid. The stampede took place near the help center for people in need, reports RIA Novosti.

There are children among the dead. The tragedy occurred at the poor relief distribution center of the main school in the Bab el-Yaman area. According to preliminary data, hundreds of people gathered in a narrow street and tried to approach the place of emission.

According to our information, 20 people affected are in critical condition and the number of victims could increase.

According to the Yemeni news agency Al-Masdar Online, the stampede began after an electrical short circuit caused the lights to go out. According to the publication, gunshots were heard before this, and after a short circuit, panic began.

Local authorities attribute the incident to a shopkeeper who organized the distribution of alms. Local entrepreneurs have been distributing aid weekly to people in need in this location.

According to the police statement, the traders “randomly distributed sums of money without coordination with the Ministry of Interior and without organization”. It should be noted that two organizers were arrested.

Years of civil war continue in Yemen. Millions of people in this country are living on the brink of starvation.
