Washington: Indian-American lawmaker Mr. Thanedar has urged the country’s Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to expand legal avenues for immigration, including increasing the number of H-1B visas. The H-1B visa is most in demand among IT professionals in India. The H-1B visa is a nonimmigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in specialty occupations that require technical expertise.
Technology companies depend on this visa to hire thousands of employees every year from countries like India and China. During a parliamentary committee hearing on Homeland Security, Mr. Thanedar told Mayorkas, “We must expand legal avenues for immigration, including raising the cap on H-1B visas.”
