The United States and a number of Ukraine’s key allies are considering a near-complete ban on exports to Russia. Writes about it Bloomberg. According to the publication, G7 leaders are discussing the initiative ahead of the May summit in Japan.
Sources of the publication said that most likely the export embargo will not affect medicines, food and agricultural products. The main difficulty is that at the level of the European Union such a decision will have to be taken unanimously, recalled the agency. Obviously, in this case, a number of countries that have retained trade with Russia will oppose innovations. Moreover, retaliatory measures from Moscow could harm the very initiators of the ban. Experts add that some of the remaining trade flows with Russia will evaporate and it will be very difficult to restore previous trade volumes in the future. Now, goods exports from the EU and G7 countries to Russia have halved.
Earlier, the Financial Times, quoting an unnamed EU official, had suggested that the anti-Russian sanctions were over. The introduction of additional restrictions will lead to more and more exceptions. Western officials are confident that when drawing up a new sanctions package, the EU will limit itself to a list of people and strengthen existing measures.
