On Thursday, US and French leaders “agreed on the importance of continued engagement” with China to help end the war in Ukraine. Emmanuel Macron said so after a telephone conversation with Joe Biden.

A statement released by Macron’s office said the French president briefed his American counterpart on the results of his visit to Beijing. In early April, the French leader traveled to China, after spending many hours talking to Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The Paris Declaration said: “China must play its part to help end the conflict in the medium term, in accordance with the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations. The heads of the two states agreed on the importance of continuing to engage with the Chinese authorities on this basis.

Macron also stressed “the importance for European countries to continue to rearm in order to take responsibility for sharing the burden of transatlantic security,” the statement said.

“The two presidents share the same desire to strengthen cooperation and uphold international law, including freedom of navigation throughout the Indo-Pacific region,” the statement said.

Returning from a trip to China, Macron angered allies, saying Europe should not blindly follow the United States in any dispute between the United States and China over Taiwan.

Speaking to the correspondent of the American publication Politico and the French newspaper Les Echos, Macron added that Europe “should not be involved in unrest in the world and crises that are outside our area of interest”. .

Macron visited Beijing, urging Xi Jinping, an ally of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, to get more involved in ending the war in Ukraine.

An aide to the French president later said that Xi Jinping had expressed interest in working with Paris to “create the conditions for negotiations” between Moscow and Kiev.

The idea of a joint initiative will be discussed between Macron’s top diplomatic adviser, Emmanuel Bonn, and China’s top diplomat, Wang Yi, in talks that will take place before the start of the summer, it said. the helper.

“The president said such negotiations must take place with full respect for international law and Ukraine’s sovereignty,” the Macron administration said. “He (Macron) urged China to play a constructive role, especially given its status as a permanent member of the (UN) Security Council.”
