Yerevan (Armenia), Apr 24 (AP) About 10,000 people marched with torches in the country’s capital on Sunday night to remember the massacre of some 1.5 million Armenians in Ottoman Turkey more than a century ago.

Activists marching from the central square to the monument complex burn Turkish and Azerbaijani flags. Tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan have escalated in recent months after Armenia blocked a road leading to the ethnic region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Historians estimate that 1.5 million Armenians were murdered by the Ottoman Turks in the last days of the Ottoman Empire, which is considered the first genocide of the 20th century. Armenia formally observed Genocide Remembrance Day on Monday.
