For the second year in a row, the United States has prevented Russian diplomats from laying wreaths in front of the Spirit of the Elbe sign.
“It is becoming increasingly difficult for us to reach out to official Washington regarding the importance of preserving memory and working together to perpetuate the heroes of this era,” said Anatoly Antonov, Russian Ambassador to Washington.
The Russian diplomat stressed that such an attitude is insulting not only to the veterans of the two countries, but also to all those who remember their great achievement.
The ambassador also pointed out that “frontline American soldiers and ordinary citizens alike cherish the memory of great deeds.”
The Spirit of the Elbe memorial at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington DC was unveiled in April 1995. The bronze plaque is engraved with the text in English and Russian: “This memorial plaque is dedicated to the Military Commonwealth of the Soviet Armed Forces , Americans and Allies in the battle against tyranny during World War II and symbolizes the meeting of Soviet and American forces. troops on the Elbe on April 25, 1945.”
Earlier, an American veteran told how the legendary encounter of Russian soldiers with American allied troops on the Elbe took place in 1945.
