United Nations. India is expected to overtake China as the world’s most populous country by the end of this month. According to the United Nations, India’s population is expected to reach 1.425 billion.
India’s population is expected to stabilize after 2064 and will be around 1.5 billion by the end of the century, a senior United Nations official said on Monday. “India is projected to overtake China as the world’s most populous country during April 2023,” John Wilmuth, director of the Population Division of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, said at a press conference here. China’s population had reached its peak, 1.4 billion, in 2022 and started declining thereafter.
Wilmuth said projections show China’s population could drop below one billion by the end of the century. On the contrary, India is expected to grow in population for many decades. India will overtake China as the world’s most populous country by the end of this month when its population is expected to reach 1.425 billion, according to the latest UN assessment and global population projections released on Monday.
Responding to a question from PTI, senior population affairs official Sarah Hertog said that it is estimated that India’s population growth may stop around 2064 and stabilize after that. However, he cautioned that there is some uncertainty with this estimate. Wilmuth said that the main factor in population trends in India and China is the fertility level.
“In 2022, China had one of the lowest fertility levels in the world, averaging 1.2 births per woman in a lifetime. The current fertility rate in India is 2.0 births per woman. Between 2023 and 2050, the number of people aged 65 years or older is expected to nearly double in China and more than double in India, he added. Meanwhile, it is estimated that the number of people aged 25 to 64 in China will increase in the coming years.
