On April 25, Moscow will host a meeting of intelligence chiefs from four countries – Turkey, Russia, Iran and Syria. This will be the first meeting of heads of defense and intelligence agencies this year. Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said the aim of the meeting was to resolve the Syrian issue through negotiations, as well as to ensure peace and stability in the region. A message about this is published on the website of the Turkish Ministry of Defense.
According to Vedomosti, on April 10 it became known that the planned meeting of the foreign ministers of Russia, Iran, Turkey and Syria had to be postponed due to Damascus’ position. The Syrian government demands the withdrawal of the Turkish army from Syrian territory before starting negotiations. In turn, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that the foreign ministers of the four countries will meet in Moscow in early May – ahead of general parliamentary and presidential elections in Turkey scheduled for May 14.
The first meeting of defense ministers and intelligence chiefs of Syria, Turkey and Russia took place in December 2022 in Moscow after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s proposal to restore diplomatic relations with Syria and meet the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
