Party leader and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced that the court in The Hague is “treating certain countries unfairly”. South Africa’s withdrawal from the court must be approved by the republic’s parliament – the party led by Ramaphosa, the majority belongs to.
In August 2023, the BRICS summit will be held in South Africa, where Russian leader Vladimir Putin has been invited. In March, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued a warrant for his arrest, as well as for the arrest of the Russian ombudsman for children, Maria Lvova-Belova.
This is not the first time that South Africa has tried to withdraw from the ICC, such an attempt has already taken place in 2016. The reason for this was the visit of Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, for the arrest which an international money order has been issued. However, the South African authorities refused to arrest him. The decision to withdraw from the ICC was eventually overturned because the national court ruled it unconstitutional.
Recall that earlier the Pre-Trial Chamber II of the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants against two people. Namely, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Children’s Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova.
