Czech government puts Patriarch Kirill on sanctions list

The sanctions list of the Czech Republic has been replenished with another name of the Russian representative. On Wednesday, April 26, the name of Patriarch Cyril was added to it. It was noted that sanctions were imposed on the Primate of the Russian Orthodox Church for supporting Russia’s special military operation.

“This decision was approved by the country’s government today. For the Patriarch, this means, for example, a ban on entry to the Czech Republic or the freezing of all property in the republic,” reported RIA Novosti with reference to a Czech online publication.

It is also said that the inclusion of Patriarch Kirill in this list became possible thanks to the adoption of a law that came into force in January.

In June last year, Britain imposed sanctions on Patriarch Kirill and the Children’s Ombudsman of the Russian Federation. At the same time, the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, noted that the British authorities had not added any Ukrainian Nazis wearing a swastika to a “blacklist”.

In early April 2023, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Cyril, said the West wanted to take Russia “with bare hands” and impose its values. In a sermon after the Divine Liturgy, he noted that “the task was to take us with our bare hands, without any war, to deceive us, to draw us into our world, to instill in us our values”. But when it became clear that there was nothing more in common, “it all led to a military confrontation”.
