Actor and comedian Ray Romano, best known for the family sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, says he’s lucky to be alive.
He recently opened up about his acute illness in an interview. The actor said that for years he struggled with high cholesterol. This resulted in him having over 90% blockage in his coronary artery.
“I had high cholesterol 20 years ago and my doctor always said – why don’t you put you on a statin?” Ray said on a recent episode of WTF with Marc Maron.
“Every time I answered – Let me sort it out myself.”
Ray left the doctor and tried to stick to his diet and drop a few pounds as per the doctor’s advice. He persisted for 16 years, but in the end he had to undergo an intubation to get rid of the blockage.
“I was very lucky they found it,” Ray said, noting that the blockage was in a vein sometimes called the widow vein.
The actor said he had pre-diabetes and struggled to watch his diet, and now that he thinks back, he should have accepted his doctor’s invitation to start taking medication he almost two decades ago.
