For a long time, the vineyards of the high mountain valley of the Salta region of Argentina were considered the highest in the world. However, in 2013, vines started growing in faraway Tibet with the support of the local government. It soon became clear that at more than 3,500 meters above sea level, different work had to be done on the viticulture than in the lower areas.
While extreme altitudes mean more sun and less risk of disease in the vines, there are also serious problems in Tibet. We are talking about extreme temperatures, drought, sunburn on the grapes, sandstorms and early frosts. To cope with these difficult conditions, smart irrigation systems are used, as well as relatively late harvests, allowing the grapes to fully ripen. It remains to be seen how good wines will taste in Tibet, according to experts.
