Hungarian Defense Ministry calls for caution over NATO expansion

The Open Door Policy does not absolve NATO allies of responsibility for strict compliance with the rules for admitting new members to the alliance. So said Hungarian Defense Minister Krishtof Salai-Bobrovnicki, urging his colleagues in the bloc to be cautious.

“Hungary supports the open door policy, but nevertheless calls on its partners to be cautious”, RIA Novosti citing the statement of the head of the Hungarian Department of Defense.

Szalai-Bobrovnicki stressed that all decisions on NATO enlargement should be taken “with full respect by the candidate countries of the conditions” and the mandatory consensus of all allies.

The minister underlined the important role of Hungary “in strengthening the eastern wing of NATO” and recalled that Budapest was one of the first in the alliance to allocate 2% of GDP to defence.

Recall that earlier Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban reacted with surprise to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg’s statement that all North Atlantic bloc allies accept Ukraine’s entry into the covenant.
