President Joe Biden on Wednesday called former President Donald Trump a danger to democracy.
The statement came a day after Biden announced his intention to run for office. The president added that he may not be the only one who can defeat Donald Trump in 2024.
“I may not be the only one, but I know him (Trump) well and I know what a danger he poses to our democracy,” Biden said. “We’ve been through this before.”
In announcing his intention to run for office on Tuesday in a video featuring footage of the Jan. 6, 2021, attack by Trump supporters on the Capitol, Biden vowed to protect American freedoms from “extremists” associated with Trump.
Biden says he will run in 2024 even if Trump drops out of the presidential race.
The president stressed that he still had a long way to go to ensure the economic and political security of the United States “for a long time”.
“I took a good look at the situation before deciding to run, and I feel good, I’m excited about the outlook, and I think we’re on the verge of making significant improvements,” Biden said. “I think we should finish what we started.”
Earlier Wednesday, Biden’s re-election campaign released its first campaign ad. It shows the Capitol Riots on January 6 and focuses on issues such as gun violence, the abortion issue, and the defense of democracy.
The ad will air on cable television in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, all of the key states most likely to determine the winner of the 2024 presidential election. In 2020, Biden won in those states.
Biden’s campaign ad refers to “an extremist movement that seeks to overturn elections, ban books and deny women the right to abortion.”
