Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law that introduces life imprisonment for treason and toughens responsibility for terrorism. The corresponding document is published on the official Internet portal for legal information.
This penalty may be applied in cases of espionage, disclosure of information constituting State secrets to foreign citizens, defection to the side of the enemy or provision of financial, logistical, advisory or other assistance to the state in activities directed against the Russian Federation.
Recall that on April 18, the State Duma of the Russian Federation in the second and third readings approved amendments to the Criminal Code, which imply a life sentence for high treason (Article 275 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation of Russia). Previously, the maximum penalty under this article provided for imprisonment of up to 20 years with a fine of up to 500,000 rubles.
