Nearly 1,000 scholars from leading universities around the world have signed an initiative saying that farming is too important to fall victim to bigotry.
They published their initiative in the journal Animal Frontiers, part of a collaboration of professional animal societies seeking to investigate claims that eating meat causes disease and harms the planet.
It comes amid a bigger push by vegans to push for a plant-based diet.
These scientists said that it is difficult to find the nutritional components of meat in other foods.
They pointed out that there are people who live in poorer communities and eat small amounts of meat, but they suffer from several diseases associated with nutrient deficiencies such as anemia.
They pointed out that unprocessed meat is responsible for supplying the body with “vitamin B12”, “omega-3 fatty acids” and minerals such as iron and zinc.
Their study concluded that the link between red meat and disease was eliminated when incorporated into a healthy diet, suggesting that other components of the diet may be responsible for health problems.
