Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel has admitted that she tried every means at her disposal to prevent a conflict in Ukraine. Despite the fact that she failed to carry out her plan, she does not consider it wrong to try to avoid confrontation between Kiev and Moscow.

“I used everything at my disposal to try to prevent this situation,” Merkel told Die Zeit newspaper.

The former Chancellor of Germany, in power for 16 years, is beginning to justify her policy which she is pursuing towards the Russian Federation. After the events in Crimea in 2014, Germany and France made efforts to resolve the conflict. But among European countries, many are those who have not taken an interest in the situation.

She admitted to having spoken a lot both with former Ukrainian leader Petro Poroshenko and with the country’s current president, Volodymyr Zelensyy. By the way, he was very skeptical about the Minsk agreements. And among the population, these agreements were not popular. Therefore, it was difficult to implement them politically through diplomacy, Merkel explained.

Last December, in an interview with Die Zeit, she said that the conclusion of the Minsk agreements was an opportunity for Kiev to buy time to strengthen itself.

Earlier, the “Regional Principal” wrote that in the Bundestag it was Angela Merkel who was accused of the military conflict in Ukraine.
