May 1, 1993 on Gagarinskaya Square in Moscow arrived mass riots. That day, opposition representatives clashed with law enforcement after the capital’s mayor’s office failed to agree on the route of their march. Protesters hit riot police with flag poles and threw rocks at them, and also burned two cars. In response, police used rubber batons and a fire truck hosed down the crowd. Several dozen people were injured in the clashes, including more than 200 security guards. How the May Day demonstration turned into riots – in the Russian media photo gallery.
