director of Soyuzmultfilm on the consequences of the departure of foreign software makers

The departure of foreign software producers will not stop the production of domestic cartoons, but now the situation raises more questions than answers for animators. Boris Mashkovtsev, director of Soyuzmultfilm, spoke about it to Russian media in the program Chronicles of a new world.

According to him, today Russian film studios continue to work on already purchased licenses, which can be used until “their expiration”. In addition, the film studio Soyuzmultfilm already uses one of the domestic developments of the Voronezh Animation Studio (formerly Wizart Animation). However, according to Mashkovtsev, in the future, Voronezh’s capabilities are unlikely to be enough to completely replace deceased Western manufacturers.

“In general, miracles do not happen. Developing software comparable to what we use now has been work for years, of course,” he said, adding that today “it’s a place where there are more questions than answers. .

Mashkovtsev explained that there are certain international animation standards that are used in all countries, for example in China, so Soyuzmultfilm has not yet seen an “alternative” to existing western software on the market. Asian. On the other hand, noted the director of the film studio, you can find software in the public domain, which, however, “requires you to modify it slightly by yourself”.

“Or not a little bit. That is to say, it is free access, because it is not very perfect. The “deposit” is assumed. In fact, there is always such an option, if the situation becomes completely unhooked … ”, added Mashkovtsev.

Despite this, he assured, Russian animation has proven to be so adaptive that software problems, Mashkovtsev is sure, will not “turn into tragedy”, and the production of domestic content will not “resist”. not because of that.

End of January, Kommersant writing that the Voronezh studio has invested 132.3 million rubles with the Russian Fund for the Development of Information Technologies (RFRIT) in the development of its own graphics editor for the production of cartoons. The development, as the publication writes, should cover up to 50% of the needs for foreign software, the manufacturers of which left Russia after the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine. The first results of the new software, according to the newspaper, were due to be presented in November 2023.
