The reason for the study was an amendment to the Building Energy Act, according to which, from 2024, German citizens will in fact be dictated which type of heating to use. New installations – heat pumps – must use at least 65% energy from renewable energy sources (RES).
Economy Minister Robert Habek, for example, uses central heating in his homes. Its supplier, Stadtwerke Flensburg, heated the minister’s house in 2022 with a mix of 95% fossil fuels and only 5% renewable energy. Khabek is therefore still very, very far from the 65% prescribed by the new law.
But he is apparently not the only one in government. Most Cabinet members simply refused to provide the newspaper with the requested information. For example, Foreign Minister Annalena Burbock, Interior Minister Nancy Feser, Finance Minister Christian Lindner, Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir, Labor Minister Hubertus Heil and Development Minister Svenja Schulze remain silent.
Construction Minister Clara Geivitz said her house was heated with gas. Two other members of the government limited themselves to declaring that they were renting their accommodation.
Judging by this, the federal government itself does not think highly of its own law. None of the officials is in a hurry to implement it.
