Myanmar: Chinese Foreign Minister visits Myanmar.

Beijing: Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Kang called for stability along the border with Myanmar and a crackdown on cross-border criminal activities. He traveled to Myanmar on Tuesday, which in itself is an unusual move.

Myanmar’s 2,129-km border runs through densely forested mountains and has long been notorious for drug trafficking into China. The Chinese foreign minister said during his visit that the local Communist Party and government departments, the People’s Liberation Army, police and civilian organizations should be involved in “strengthening the border defense system”.

Chin Kang called for maintaining stability along the border and cracking down on cross-border criminal activities. “The aim is to coordinate border management, border trade development and bilateral relations,” the ministry quoted him in a news release as saying. Fighting between the U.S. military and ethnic armed groups occasionally flares up along the border, with mortars occasionally falling into China and refugees fleeing there.

China tries to maintain contact with all sides. However, he has been criticized for explicitly stating his support for the junta.
