Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sharad Pawar on Tuesday surprised everyone by saying that he was resigning from the post of party president. He announced his decision at the launch of his revised autobiography. Only last week, when he had said in a party program that now is the time to turn the roti from the griddle, it was probably not clear that he was about to take a big decision regarding his future. But his daughter Supriya Sule predicted a week ago and indicated that something big is going to happen in the party.
Since 1999, Sharad Pawar, the founder president of the Nationalist Congress Party, started his political innings from May 1, 1960, and by completing it by May 1, 2023, announced to leave the leadership of the party on May 2, has presented an ideal for other parties.
The interesting thing is that the party workers and top leaders may not have heard about his decision but it seems that Sharad Pawar had consulted the family members. That’s why there was no surprise on the faces of his wife, daughter and nephew present in the program of book release. When Ajit Pawar addressed the emotional and sad workers and said that ‘now Pawar Saheb will not take back his resignation’, it became clear that Sharad Pawar has announced his decision very carefully.
As for Sharad Pawar leaving the post of Speaker, he himself said that he will complete the remaining 3 years of his membership in Rajya Sabha and will work closely with the new Speaker. By telling the leaders and workers who urged them not to leave the post, that they will no longer lead the party, they definitely indicated that they have decided to move from the driving seat of the party to the back seat. Some people speculate that he made this announcement so that those who were talking about a split in the party could be made to realize that even today Sharad Pawar is the accepted leader in the party. Whatever may be the basis of those who believe this, but this much is true that even today no one else has a bigger stature in the party than Sharad Pawar. Whosoever may be the president of NCP in future, but it will be what Sharad Pawar wants.
The possibility is also being expressed that by handing over the state politics to Ajit Pawar and the national politics of the party to Supriya Sule, Sharad Pawar will definitely try to coordinate the two because he knows that if there is no positive cooperation between the two in time.
