Fifteen-meter snake jumped and tried to fly in a helicopter – What kind of snake did the colonel take a picture of in the Congo?

– Published on:

In 1959, Remy Van Lierde served as a colonel in the Belgian Air Force at Kamina Air Base in the then Belgian-occupied Congo.

He was returning from a helicopter patrol over the Katanga region in the Democratic Republic of Congo when he emerged with his fists on his forehead.
Remy Van Lierde
He was flying over the jungle when he thought he saw something that looked like a snake. But no ordinary pipe. He turned and lowered his flight, not believing what he saw.

He said the snake was about 15 meters long with a triangular head measuring 3 by 2 meters, with dark brown and green scales and a white belly.

If Van Lierde’s assessment is correct, it is the largest snake ever seen, and the exact creature Van Lierde saw is still debated.

Even if he took a picture.

But what scared Van Lierde was that when the helicopter lowered its flight, the magpie jumped three meters in the air and tried to grab the lower part of the helicopter with its mouth.

It showed the complete fearlessness of the animal, which was obviously used to being at the top of the food chain and fearless.

The longest known species of snake in the world is the Malayopython reticulatus, which measures about six and a half meters long on average. However, one specimen was found that measured 9.6 meters. But Malayopython reticulatus is native to Southeast Asia and has never been seen in Africa.
They are also the larger strangler snakes of southern Asia.
The color combination indicated that it was an anaconda, but it is impossible for them to reach such length.

The snake, or more specifically its descendants, has not been seen again, which appears to be captured in a photograph.

There are mainly two suggestions as to what Van Lierde saw that day. The first is that it was an African rattlesnake that for some reason, possibly a genetic defect, had grown to this enormous size.

The other is that it is a species that is still completely unknown, at least for populations outside the Congo. She may even be a direct descendant

of the tube that existed 60 million years ago and was of a similar size, according to the fossils that have been found.

But enthusiasts of such creatures still wonder about the giant Congo snake.
