Doha. Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra made a remarkable comeback after recovering from injury to win the Doha Diamond League 2023 title.
Chopra’s first throw was 88.67 which was a great way to start the new season. His first throw was enough to seal the win but he still tried to move on.
It was clear after his throw that Chopra was not satisfied despite getting off to a good start. He was leading the charts after the first attempt.
Chopra’s second throw was of 86.04 metres. Chopra maintained his lead over Tokyo Olympics silver medalist Jakub Wadljich (88.63m) and world champion Andersen Peters (85.88m). Neeraj had a lead of only four centimetres.
In his third attempt, Neeraj threw the javelin from a distance of 85.47 metres. He kept the lead despite the distance being short on his first attempt. Neeraj fouled in the fourth attempt.
In his second last attempt, he touched a distance of 84.37m. On the other hand, Wadlej still could not cross Chopra’s distance (88.47m) in his fifth attempt. Anderson Peters fell behind in his fifth attempt as he recorded a distance of 82.22m.
In the end, Neeraj won the distance covered in his first attempt. However, the Olympic gold medalist missed out on crossing the 90m mark.
On the other hand, India’s Eldoj Paul, the reigning Commonwealth Games triple jump champion, finished 10th in the 11-man field with a best jump of 15.84m in his first attempt.
Making his Diamond League debut, 26-year-old Eldoj Paul cleared 13.65m and 14.70m in his next two attempts and failed to advance to the medal round. Paul’s personal best is 16.99m which he achieved at the Federation Cup of India last year
