Eating french fries is said to increase the risk of depression and anxiety

said recently CNN of a recent study which suggests that fried foods can have a negative effect on the mental health of those who ingest them.

A research team in Hangzhou, China concluded that frequent consumption of fried foods, especially potatoes, can increase the likelihood of anxiety by twelve percent and depression by seven percent. This is said to be especially true for young consumers.

However, some nutrition experts would like to say that these are preliminary results and the causal relationship is not yet entirely clear. Still, those who already suffer from anxiety or depression (or even both) are likely to seek solace in fried foods.

Nearly 141,000 people took part in the early study, which lasted more than eleven years. People diagnosed with depression within the first two years were excluded from further participation. Finally, among those who consumed fried foods, 8,294 participants were diagnosed with anxiety and 12,375 with depression. The result was also that eating fried potatoes increased the likelihood of depression by 2% more than eating fried white meat.

According to the study, it is the chemical acrylamide, which is formed during frying, that is the main causative factor when it comes to this link between fried foods and depression and anxiety.

Yu Zhang, a researcher at Zhejiang University and a member of the research team, says there is no need to use the adhesives for the study. He says, however, that reducing the consumption of fried foods can benefit people’s mental health.

The results of the study specifically point out that according to figures from the World Health Organization (WHO), the frequency of depression and anxiety has increased globally and it is estimated that five percent of all adults around the world suffer from depression.
