There are many types of digital data, but the most important to most of us are those that document a memory or happy moment, such as photos, videos, or even music and audio recordings.
Based on this reality, data storage media are of great importance, but a study conducted by the American company Back Blaze came to a shocking conclusion.
It turns out that the average hard drive has a lifespan of only two and a half years.
The study also found that the smaller the hard drive in terms of data capacity, the more likely it is to survive.
Tech experts have established what they call a golden rule to protect data from damage, which is 1-2-3… i.e. store three copies, two on two storage media different and one in a place far from you.
You can, for example, keep copies on your PC, on an external hard drive or on one of the cloud storage services.
To address the subject, Iyad Barakat, a specialist in security and information technology, said in an interview with “Sky News Arabia”:
Our lives have another digital twin, and so we have to consider two things, the first is that the information is not lost, and the second is what we store? This stored information comes at an environmental cost, as we spend a lot of energy preserving potentially insignificant information. Many countries do not want information to be stored outside of the national computer system. Personal photos can be stored wherever you want, but we must be aware of privacy. Many electronic clouds are now secure.
