Today, Iraqis in the city of Basra preserve this heritage, as they teach it to amateurs and students.

Arabic calligraphy classes that teach lessons and provide tips for improving handwriting are still held to attract enthusiasts and students to the city even as the era of digital writing flourishes.

Arabic calligraphy expert Khadir Al-Azzawi, director of the Iraqi Cultural Center for Arabic Calligraphy and Decoration in Basra, said: “Our people have started to learn how to improve and straighten the writing because, unfortunately, our society began and at high levels sees a dean of a college or president of an establishment and even a minister whose handwriting is very bad, in addition to the suffering of the parents. the proofreader.. and we opened a course to correct and improve handwriting and teach Arabic calligraphy.

For more than a year now, Al-Azzawi has been giving free lessons to those who want to learn to write texts in Arabic calligraphy, in its various forms, or improve their writing in general in an unstoppable technological age.

For her part, participant Delfa Daoud said, “I use it and write paintings at home. I was writing on small papers. Now I write a big paper and put it in my room. who bought my painting.. The church bought my painting.. I joined them in a bazaar, and they bought it.” They liked it very much… so they bought it… and that encouraged me more.”

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said that in 2021 it added Arabic calligraphy to the list of intangible cultural heritage, which is a major practice and tradition in the Arab and Islamic worlds.

It should be noted that the flow of Arabic calligraphy provides endless possibilities, even within a single word, where letters can be lengthened and changed in different ways with different decorative shapes.
