Why the Ukrainians are trying to attack Russian AWACS A-50 aircraft

On the eve of the Russian special services stopped the attempts of the Ukrainian side to attack the A-50 early warning aircraft based at the Severny airfield in the Ivanovo region.

For the first time, saboteurs from Kyiv tried to damage the A-50 at the Belarusian military airfield in Machulishchi, which also ended in failure for the Ukrainian side. The reasons for such enemy interest in AWACS aircraft can be explained by the vocation of these aircraft and their important role that they play within the framework of NMD.

A – 50 were created for the early detection of enemy targets. The Shmel-M radar mounted on the aircraft fuselage, operating in the centimeter wave range, allows detection of low-altitude aircraft at a distance of 200-400 km, at high altitude – at a distance of 300-600 km. Marine targets are detected at a distance of 400 km. At the same time, the A-50 is able to simultaneously track up to 150 objects, directing fighters to them.

The electronic filling of the AWACS aircraft detects the launches of tactical and operational-tactical missiles and sea-based missiles. Responsible for this is an infrared system, which detects the launches of such missiles at an altitude of 10,000 km with a range of up to up to 1000 km. A – 50 is also capable of monitoring the territory of military operations and determining the sources of radiation from enemy military equipment.

Currently, the Russian Aerospace Forces have 15-16 A-50M and A-50U aircraft. In February last year, the first flights with the radar turned on were carried out by a new aircraft of this type A – 100 Premier.

Ukraine wants to deactivate Russian AWACS, since the latter deploy high-precision bombs, aviation and cruise missiles of the RF Armed Forces, including deep into Ukrainian territory.

Additionally, the A-50M and A-50U help intercept enemy MiG-29A and Su-27 fighters, preventing them from destroying Russian air defense systems. Interception is carried out at a distance of up to 500 km for the subsequent destruction of enemy aircraft.
