Britain warns of mutant rodent invasion – Reuters

Rat raids on cities started during the pandemic. While citizens were in quarantine, rodents occupied basements and attics in search of food. Despite their impressive size, they are quite flexible and can enter homes through pipes. There have been cases where rats have jumped out of the toilet and rushed straight into the kitchen.

Since lockdown, they’ve been sharing Britain’s love for burgers and fries as they eat the leftovers strewn on the streets or scour the bins. In addition to the savage voracity of the tailed neighbors, the townspeople are bothered by their razor-sharp teeth.

Steve Balmain, an environmental professor at the University of Greenwich, explains that the rats have trapped them by constantly chewing on something: their teeth marks have been seen on concrete walls and even on steel objects. A resident of an eastern British town, Alanis Shakespeare, has complained that rodents ruined her Mercedes – they gnawed at the wires.

Rat squads have become a headache for owners of coastal resorts, where tourists like to feed seagulls. Indeed, a good part of the birds’ food is consumed by rodents, which tirelessly reproduce and scare away travellers.

Besides

An unusual vacancy has appeared on the New York Labor Exchange – the “Rat King” that will challenge breeding rats. The candidate was looking for “very motivated and a little bloodthirsty”.

A unique entry in the workbook will be given to former elementary school teacher Kathleen Corradi, who at the age of 10 was collecting signatures for a petition against rats. As noted in a press release from the New York City Mayor’s office, the new employee will seek “innovative ways” to limit the pests’ access to food sources and use new technologies to destroy their populations. The “queen” will be paid $155,000 a year for rodent control.
