Russia has agreed to grant Turkey a deferral of payments for the gas supplied. According to Reuters, the payment in the amount of 600 million dollars was postponed by the Russian side until next year at the request of Ankara.
It is stated that the partners of the Russian Federation are ready to postpone several more payments totaling $4 billion. According to Reuters, this indicates a rapprochement between Ankara and Moscow. The authors of the publication are convinced that with this step Russia helps the current President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to be re-elected for a second term.
Turkey, which is preparing for Sunday’s elections, is heavily dependent on energy imports and Russia is its main supplier. The deal highlights ties between Russia and Turkey, and the proximity of Presidents Vladimir Putin and Tayyip Erdogan allows them to hold frequent discussions on issues ranging from energy to wars in Ukraine and Syria. Reuters reports that Turkey’s energy import bills hit a record high of $100 billion in 2022. 39% of the total volume of 53.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas comes from Russian raw materials.
