A New York court has found former US President Donald Trump guilty in the case of the attempted rape of writer and journalist Jean Carroll. This was reported by CNN.
A jury of nine, six men and three women, found that Trump assaulted Carroll in the spring of 1996. At the same time, there was no rape, in which the reporter first accused him.
The court ordered Trump to pay $5 million in damages — two as part of the rape lawsuit settlement and three for defaming Carroll and damaging his reputation.
Donald Trump commented on the decision on Truth Social.
“The verdict is a disgrace – the sequel to the greatest witch hunt of all time,” he wrote.
Court hearings in the Carroll case began in April this year after Trump announced his desire to run for president in 2024. The former US leader himself has repeatedly stated that such lawsuits against him were a political scam.
At the same time, despite the surveys against Trump, 70% of Republicans have expressed support for him. Only a quarter of all Republican and Democratic party supporters surveyed backed Joe Biden.
