Supreme Court held Imran Khan’s arrest illegal

Islamabad: Declaring the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan as illegal, the Supreme Court on Thursday directed Islamabad Inspector General of Police Dr Akbar Nasir Khan to produce him before the court by 4.30 pm. According to reports, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Umar Ata Bandial made the remarks while presiding over a three-member bench hearing PTI’s petition challenging Imran’s arrest. Apart from CJP, the bench also includes Justice Athar Minallah and Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar.

It is noteworthy that the Rangers arrested former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran from the Islamabad High Court premises on Tuesday and handed him over to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). An ‘Accountability Court’ of Islamabad had handed over Imran to NAB on remand for eight days. CJP Bandyal termed Imran’s arrest from the High Court premises as a “huge insult to the country’s judicial establishment”.

The Supreme Court asked, ‘What was the need for NAB to take law into its own hands? Where is the sanctity of the court left after the arrest from the court premises? What was the respect of the court left, when 90 people entered the court premises. NAB has insulted the court.
