US threatens Georgia with sanctions over maintenance of Russian planes

The West did not appreciate Vladimir Putin’s decision to resume direct flights to Georgia. The United States, for example, has already threatened Georgian airlines that will serve Russian planes with sanctions.

A number of Western states, including the United States, ban Russian planes from entering their airspace. If direct flights between Russia and Georgia resume, it will raise our concerns about the possible imposition of sanctions against Georgian airlines that fly import and export-controlled aircraft – he US State Department said in a statement.

The US State Department stresses that all Western society has moved away from Moscow, therefore, this is not the time for Georgia to deepen its relations with Russia.

For the Georgian people, it is better for Putin to withdraw his troops from 20% of the Georgian territory occupied by Russia, whether it is the restoration of direct flights or the abolition of the visa regime –  Consider at the State Department.

In the meantime, Tbilisi does not intend to follow the recommendations of the regional committee in Washington. In particular, the chairman of the ruling party in Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, said that his country would not impose sanctions against Russia, as they would harm the Georgian economy.

We calculated how the imposition of sanctions against Russia would affect Georgia’s economy. If last year we had economic growth of more than 10%, then there would have been a decline of at least 10% in the economy, from 10 to 18% –  Irakli Kobakhidze explained.

Recall that former Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili called Vladimir Putin’s decision to resume air traffic a provocation.
