Chinese President Xi Jinping made an inspection visit to the city of Tsangchow in Hebei Province on May 11, where he quickly inspected wheat fields and a port facing the sea. Earlier that day, Xi Jinping arrived in Xianchuang District, located in Qiuchang Town of Huanghua City, which is home to dry-alkali wheat fields. He took stock of the status of wheat planting and propagation on dry-alkaline land.

The history of planting Huanghua dry-alkali wheat is more than 2 thousand years old. Generally it is sown in October of the year and harvested in June of the next year. The unique planting conditions and long growth cycle have created the unique quality of Huanghua dry-alkali wheat. About 507 hectares of dry-alkali wheat is planted in Xienchwang district. Presently retail planting is dominant, more than 2600 people from 709 families cultivate this type of wheat. During the current inspection tour, Xi Jinping also paid attention to the industrialization of dry-alkali wheat.

On May 11, Xi Jinping also visited the coal terminal of Huanghua Port in Tsangcho City, taking stock of the coal terminal’s production, operation and development plan. Located on the Pohai Bay, Huanghua Port extends to the Xiong’an New Region, central and southern Hebei, Shandong, Henan, Shaanxi, Shaanxi, and the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. Currently 46 berths have been built in this port, in the year 2022 the container throughput is expected to exceed 1 million TEU for the first time.

President Xi Jinping said that “the port is a basic and important facility, which is an important support for economic development.” On his many domestic inspection visits, he has made arrangements for the development of ports several times. From a dry-alkaline wheat field to a coal port, Chinese President Xi Jinping has focused on a number of topics during his ongoing inspection tour. From food security to energy security, from the “chip” of the seed to the “ambition” of the port, these are all related to the future and destiny of the country, the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation, the happiness and welfare of the people, and the long-term stability of society.
